Support Matt: Running the Two Oceans Marathon for paedspal
Meet Matt Byron
At just 11 years old, Matt was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes – a condition that requires constant monitoring and careful management of blood sugar levels. But rather than letting it define him, Matt has turned his diagnosis into a source of strength.
Now, he’s taking on his biggest challenge yet: running the Two Oceans Half Marathon (21km) while managing Type 1 Diabetes – to raise funds for Paedspal. T provides palliative care for children facing serious illnesses.

matt’s challenge
Running a marathon is tough for anyone but for Matt, it’s even harder. He must carefully balance his blood sugar levels before, during, and after each step:
- Too high? He risks dehydration, pain, and exhaustion.
- Too low? He could collapse mid-run.
Using a Dexcom G7, he continuously monitors his blood sugar during training and races, adjusting with insulin or glucose gels as needed.
Main Differences: Type 1 Diabetes & Type 2 Diabetes
What Matt Hopes to Achieve
Matt is running not just for himself, but for:
- Raising awareness that Type 1 Diabetes doesn’t have to be a limitation.
- Inspiring solidarity among others with Type 1 Diabetes, especially athletes.
- Supporting Paedspal, ensuring that children with life-threatening illnesses get the care and comfort they deserve.
Despite the fatigue, burnout, and constant adjustments, Matt refuses to let diabetes hold him back. His journey is proof that with the right mindset and preparation, nothing is impossible.

Why Our Work Matters
Across South Africa, thousands of children face life-limiting and life-threatening conditions—from
congenital disorders and pediatric cancers to complications related to HIV/AIDS. Despite the
incredible resilience of these children and their families, a significant care gap remains.
